I asked three writers (of three stories for permission to podfic) about *peers at spreadsheet* May 05, 2018. I was in no hurry to get a response, but I’ve done quite a few podfics since then!
Alas, no answers at the minute, but time marches on, and so must I.
The idea was to have 10-15 hours of audio files by the end of this exercise (then multiply that with editing times and ratio of 4:1 = fhour minutes of effort for one minute of recording), I would have clocked between 40 and 60 hours which would have been enough hours in a short space of time (eight weeks, give or take) .
Up to now, I’ve done about 5.8 hours of posted audio. If I’d gotten permission, that would have been another three.
As it stands, I have a 15k and 30k fic in the queue. They’ve gone from loitering in the back, to be being called up front.
If I’m calculating my times right, a 14k fic will be around 90 mins of audio, and 30k about 180 mins of audio (about 3.4 hours) which will come up to 9.21 hours of audio in total. Which will be well short of my 10 hours (the minimum I was hoping to hit), or 15 hours (optimum).
I’ve looked at fics with BP, and honestly, I don’t tip my hat for fics lower than 2k. I’ve come to this conclusion due to various reasons, primarily: the outlay in setting up for the reading, editing, creating dual formats of files and virtual ‘real estate’ just to host said fic.
But there are bits and pieces of fics by an author I’m looking to do. So, I’m still thinking.
If push comes to shove and I end up with 9.21 hours of audio, so be it. It will be nine hours of audio in a fandom that’s never had the nine hours before, guv’nor. I’ve also tried to make the fic pairings varied (although, I do confess to my footie OTP of OTPs having about three fics in there), and the stories and styles interesting so that there’s something for most people to have a nibble at. So I won’t feel too badly if I fall short of my mark.
It would be lovely if I had gotten permissions for the others, but it’s fine.
ETA: after speaking with a fellow podficcer, who’s of the opinion that you should have two hosting sites for your podfic, not just one, I have rebooted my Mediafire account.
