Listening to this audio and I’m almost at the stage where I think I could post and not feel terrible about the quality. Some things are still vexing though:

  • The sound levels are a bit uneven. I do unconsciously change positions at times. Sometimes it’s louder (as if I’m drifting closer to the laptop without noticing).

  • I hear this can be done in post editing (noise levelling). I do know people with software that can do this for me, but… hmmm. Supposedly, GarageBand offers this option. We will see.

  • The next time, I’ll try reading at a table, but my PC in that room has this low-level hum of a sound that might be a bit too distracting.

  • The editing can be a bit juddering, tbh. It’s like… the aural equivalent of a YouTube makeup video when they are rushing through the steps, or those eighties music videos with the rapid stop motion. The finished product needs to sound smoother.

  • My best sound booth seems to be my camper van. Unfortunately, my neighbourhood is the sort where neighbours will call the police thinking that you are a vagrant living in your car if you stay there for too long.

  • I spent 90 mins on a fifteen-minute read (including pre-prep, recording, editing on the go and post edits in terms of putting in strategic pauses). Still slow, but faster than before, and progress.

  • I have four more practice fics (6k, 3k, 2k, 3k) to work out the kinks re: edits for a smooth audio flow before attempting the bigger fics in my inbox.

So far, I’ve done 1/5 of the self-mandated man hours in this exercise. Once these fics are done, I think I can focus on the bigger ones in the queue (8k, 15k, 30k, 20k), and that should take up my 60 hours on this task nicely.
