I got a mic
Jul. 3rd, 2018 08:45 amDue to a strange bit of luck, I got a mic, due to someone moving.

It’s an MCU-01 Studio Großmembran Kondensator. It’s a directional characteristic mic (default Cardioid setting, if I’m reading this right, a lot of of the reviews/specs are in German and Russian) with a USB plug in (look ma, no drivers). This seems to be a mic available for German and Russian markets because I can’t really find much about it in English (and the one available in Britain has different model numbers and looks completely different from this as it were). Specs wise, it’s basic, but my needs are relatively basic, so we are OTP.
At first my computer didn’t pick it up, causing my S/O to look at me and go, “Are you sure you wish to continue with a hobby that seems to not like you… at all? I thought football was the only dysfuntional relationship you wanted?” But honestly, you can’t beat free, and the guy offered it to me, so…
Also, after wrestling with that 3 hour file of doom with its crashes and plug ins that refused to plug in, and non working .m4b file action, nothing much makes me flinch in the land of podfic anymore (although there be dragons lying in wait, I’m sure). So I just got on with it. Found a German forum, and with the help of my terrible German and better Google translate, I walked through the directions and made it work.
Just by fiddling around with it, I’m surprised at how clear the voice quality is (and this is a mid priced mic, about €40-€60 depending). In retrospect, the sound quality of my podfics haven’t been that bad, since I do all the blanket forting, noise plating, then mixing down with Auraphonic (although the chatter of birds won’t let me be great. Podfic is really a winter activity).
However, the sound quality is so much better! My vocals are a lot smoother. I’m almost wishing that I’d had this for my three hour podfic, but it’s fine. I wouldn’t have been able to appreciate the mic (and the generousity of the person who posted it out to me) before now. Nothing before its time, as they say.
Now to experiment on one of my fics. I’d rather practice on mine and not feel bad if my podfic doesn’t work out.
Whereas with other fics written by other people, I tend to feel terrible if I do badly by them. This has been further compounded by the fact that I seemingly did so badly by one writer and their fic when I podficced, they actually deleted their comment (that was relatively pleasant towards the podfic).
It’s left me poking at podfic and wondering if it was THAT BAD. But I’m not curious enough to relisten, because once I throw work up, be it fic (or podfic), I’m over it. I won’t take it down, because the work is already done, with a cover, 2 options and streaming.
That being said, I won’t ever look at that author’s work again.
