Podfic phase 1. done. reflections.
May. 25th, 2018 06:24 amI’ve yet to start on phase 2: Audacity Bugaloo, but anyway, just thought I’d do spotted reflections on phase one. You know the drill:
Anyway, now that I ’m starting on Audacity, so my productivity is going to take a hit until I get my head around that process, and these entries are going to go quiet for a bit until I can talk about what I don’t or do know. My partner is all, “You should probably do recordings in GB and edit in Audacity before – no. I know you. You’re going to go all in, aren’t you? Because you’re barking.”
Thus endeth the Chronicles of Phase 1 in podfic. GarageBand ends, and the pivot to Audacity begins.
Thanks to those who’ve read and liked the entries so far! For the people who are already podficcing, this must be old hat to you, but thank you for weighing in, truly. And for those who haven’t done podficcing, but are reading and liking, thank you as well! I hope you’ve learnt a bit about the process like I have!
- Breakdowns: total fics done in this phase: six football fics (posted), Actually, I’ve done eight. The first podfic was my own and terrible, the second, a Formula 1 fic (which I WILL rerecord - just not now), but I’m sticking to what I’ve posted.
- Six football podfics came up to 203 mins of run time (about 3.4 hours), and with edits, you multiply that by three (I got faster as I went along but it evens out)
- Strangely, I spend more time prepping for recording fic, and time in post edits than the recording.
It took me longer than I thought to make podfic covers for both .m4b waves and mp3 skins. - In retrospect, I would have made different choices for voice and performance, but you don’t know what you don’t know until you know. I’m not going to beat up myself over it, but I’ve easily spent a good twenty hours on this endeavour so far, and a lot of that was learning how to do things.
- The fics are okay, but not great. That’s due to the absence of the little margins which make all the difference. E.g. there’s no three second bit before the audio kicks in, or five seconds after the recording is done. There’s a recording fumble two minutes in in another fic, random rustling (but I’m keeping the songbirds, tbh) and just general audio seams that are showing. But it’s fine. I refuse to make perfect be the enemy of the good.
- Now that I know how to do things, it should make the process quicker, smoother and the product a higher quality. “But you’re now learning Audacity?” my SO asks. He really needs to jog on and let me be (I think he’s astonished that I’ve stuck with this endeavour for so long, because I’m deeply lazy? For instance, he’s the one who made me set up my nano to my MacBook Pro, because after I’d bought it -after a lot of saving-, I left it in the case for so LONG the model got discontinued, he got annoyed and sat me down and refused to make me tea until I got it done.)
