We Were Once Cinema Gods In The Night by aphelant

Inception; Arthur/Eames AU

Summary: That’s the thing about Hollywood–everyone has a Hollywood story.

I won’t lie, I liked the Inception movie well enough on first watch, but not enough to watch it again. Strangely, I had no truck with the canon based fics of the fandom, but the AU fics were (and are) stole my heart. I won’t get into the writer of the fic because the focus is on the podfic and the performance. Aphelant is so good. They infuse the words with personality, and every character’s voice is distinct and different. There are dialogues where there is more than one person speaking at a time, and they make it seem like a room of people. The voices shades of frantic and mocking - yet every character is so different and so full.

The story is dynamic, and it demands a lot from a podficcer, I’d think. Because the story cackles with manic energy and doesn’t let up, it demands total commitment to the crazy Hollywood premise by the podficcer. If they’d let up, you’d know it, because the story would flag. But aphelant did the routine and stuck the landing. They started strong, kept on going and ended just as strong as they started. The audio is crisp and clear, her pronunciation sharp, and they have the nous and the acting chops to make everything land, from jokes to pathos and the ending.

Seriously, if you’re walking the dog, or going on a trip where you are going to be stuck on a train or plane for a bit, this fic is worth a listen. It kept me smiling all the way through, even though I had a vexing evening dog sitting. Honestly, you don’t need to know the movie to enjoy this podfic. It’s enjoyable and worth a listen.
