last minute sub fics

Although I’ve been involved in lastminutesub business for a minute (as a beta reader, and on call for pitch hitting for the past couple of years), I’ve never written for the fic exchange challenge. I pretty much put my hand in this year because of reasons involving @itsadrizzit (they know why). Anyway, I wrote not one but two (two!!!) stories.
It Fits Me (Keylor Navas/Marcelo) for ascience. In football, if you’re unhappy, you’re never lucky, Marcelo says. After the transfer to Man United falls through, Keylor realises how true that is.
True story, I’m not a Real Madrid fan at all. Yet I keep writing Real Madrid stories. They aren’t romantic, nor are they overly respectful. If my RM fic were a drink, they’d be a bottle of Angostura bitters. So I’m always pleasantly taken aback when people like them as a result.
The Drunken Catch (David Alaba/ Odell Beckham Jnr) for raumdeuter “You’re drunk,” Rose tells David, and yeah, perhaps he is, but it’s not because of alcohol.
I tried to follow American football for a minute, with all the hype that the NFL have tried to bring to this side of the pond by involving various media and personalities. For instance, BBC carrying the Superbowl, with Martin O’Neill (the manager of the Republic of Ireland’s football team) talking up why it’s great. As well as Talksport radio presenters choosing a side that they are trying to get excited over in order to loop new converts in.
The NFL have done their best reeling in European footballers to watch and sell the game, especially in high profile clubs (Harry Kane and Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur are the ones that readily come to mind, as well as Boateng and Riberi from Bayern Munich). In addition, the NFL have done a charm offensive over the past year, by sending their best and most telegenic of their game over to Europe, and that’s how I came across this video.
No, I don’t like American football much. The whole business around it leaves me cold (teams upping sticks from cities because of tax breaks, and no pro/rel), and the game is too centred around commercial breaks (no game should be longer than ninety minutes) but I can appreciate Odell Beckham Jnr. He comes across as interesting and interested, which is the most one can ask from any sports personality, really. It helps that he played ‘soccer’ as a child, so his love for the game is legit, and his admiration for the European footballers isn’t a forced thing. The friendship between Alaba and himself seems filled with affection, and respect for each other’s abilities in their respective sports, so it was nice to write that.
Both fics are gen and on the short side for me (6k and 4k respectively).
