May. 27th, 2018 05:47 pmI’ve done a basic reading and edits of a podfic in Audacity (*applause*). It wasn’t the best in terms of background (I camped in a seaside town last night, by the sea, after a Champions League final, so… do the math, as they say).
To give Audacity a fair shot, I’m going to do the same 3.5 hours of finished Audio files. For the first two fics in this audio I’ll do my own. Not to share or post, just to get my head around the basic processes before I move on. Also, those two audio fics won’t count towards the 3.5 hours of finished files. So off to find two more fics of mine (around 3k words).
ETA: if anyone wants to sacrifice a fic to my machinations, tell me.
- I’ve gotten my head around edits. With podfic, a big part of it is pretty much hacking, scrubbing and smoothing away the stuff you don’t want, sad but true.
- I do like editing as I go for wicked blunders, then I normally listen to the playthrough and do another round of edits (this is where I clean up, add more studied silences, etc). Last night, that kinda worked? But I realise that this is my first rodeo with the programme, so I might do an entire reading and try and edit it afterwards. Although I have my doubts about working that way, I’ll do it before dismissing it, like I did with the snap method.
- I have to pause and then stop in Audacity in order to get the cursor to stay where I need to stay. It’s not an issue, once I know, but it was an issue
- The editing inside the waveforms is new for me. With GarageBand, I have to move the playhead to go where I want to go. With Audacity, I touch them and they go crazy. So it’s been a lot of, “Okay, self, leave them alone.”
The normalise/noise reduction method is LOVE. It really cleaned up my sound, despite the doors slamming, people screaming, etc. I haven’t done much in terms of clipping (aka distortion), but I played around with layers, and audio reverb and enhancer.
The envelope function in Audacity is better than the Garageband fade (for me, anyway).
Apropos of nothing, I can’t read my own work, tbh. I don’t know my own rhythm. Or it might just be this story, idek. We will see.
