Podfic: Phase Two

I really hope y’all are blacklisting the tags if you aren’t interested in podficcing.

I’ve downloaded Audacity, and I’m going to put GarageBand on ice for a minute. There are reasons for my choice, namely:

  • Mainly, the noise reducing, smoothing and compression tools. I don’t think I’ll ever be in a position to buy a mic (well, not for the while anyway, I’m trying to offload things than get more things into my house at the minute), and this will help with my pops and my hisses (when you puff your ps and hiss your s’s).

  • A lot of people with GB who do Audiobooks for Audible actually record in GarageBand - and finish the editing process in Audacity

  • Apple updates are around the corner (I think they update their programmes quarterly?) and I know GB will be updated. So all the stuff that I’ve learned to do and the interface that I have is going to change, and they stopped having the option of people opting for legacy settings.

  • There’s the fact that there’s more information on how to do things in Audacity, tbh. If I have problems/issues, there’s the Wiki, and if not, there are enough people in the fandom doing it to be considered a Wiki

The thing is though, I know I’m going to HATE myself for taking on another steep learning curve, because I was actually levelling out with GB, even with the backdoor and the fumbling around. Audacity looks pretty complicated to me, especially with the LAME mp3 plug in to attend to (I’ll deal with that later). Already, I know I will have to change my approach to recording and editing. To the point where I even thought about recording in GB and editing in Audacity, but ehh, I tend to go full on with these things, anyway.

So. I’m going to draw a line under my GB recorded podfics and try and post them soonish. My pod covers are not great, but there’s only so much you can do with free programmes (limited typography and movement in text placement for one), but people will deal.

Of course, posting podfic seems to be another complication, what with people going with splash pictures. I will say though, podfic is a bloody vocation, because I’ve never worked this hard at fandom ever - and fandom is the reason why I learnt how to knit (Harry Potter scarf) and sew (Harry Potter cloak!)
